Upper Canada Park Redevelopment - Skatepark & Ball Diamonds

Kitchener, ON

Upper Canada Park is located at 120 Pioneer Drive in Kitchener and is 11.7ha in size. This park offers something for everyone – from the sports enthusiasts to those looking for serenity and passive recreation only the great outdoors can provide. Revitalization of this existing park project involved the reconfiguration of four softball diamonds and one new blast ball field. This project required the installation of a 3m high retaining wall mid way through the site to elevate two ball diamonds and improve drainage while meeting GRCA flood plain requirements. This grade change created an elevated view for ball game spectators when standing on top of the retaining wall. All four ball fields include slit drainage, irrigation, and sod. Construction of this 500m2 concrete skateboard/youth park included the removal of existing deep topsoil and re-engineering of the skatepark sub-base with structural soil. Construction also involved site preparation, earthworks, installation of an infiltration gallery in the landscape area to capture stormwater runoff, site servicing, fine grading, metal work, concrete walls, concrete slabs, concrete transition, bank elements, and related landscape works Other amenities include asphalt and limestone pathways, relocated playground structure, shade structure, and basketball court. The park was completed with native tree & shrub planting and seeding to balance with the nearby by natural areas.
