Station 125 – Mississauga’s first net zero fire station 125 is approximately 930 sq.m. (10,000 sq.ft.) and consists of living quarters and 2 drive-through truck bays. FS 125 has been designed and constructed to achieve Net Zero Energy, and also achieve Level II of the City’s Corporate Green Building Standard. The building is also constructed as a ‘Post-Disaster’ building, to be used for emergency services. The station is an entirely electric building, with the exception of a natural gas backup generator. Power consumption is offset by a network of 238 solar panels which are installed on the roof, canopies and the south facing walls. The station has a high performance building envelope that includes enhanced insulation, high performance triple glazed windows and, insulated high speed bi-fold doors for the two-bay apparatus area to provide a better seal. These contributing factors are pivotal in achieving the net-zero milestone. As part of long-range planning, heavy-vehicle charging stations have been installed for the future implementation of electric fire trucks.
